From Unknown to Breakthrough: Tracing a New CO₂ Reaction Pathway with DEMS and DFT What began as an obscure, uncharted possibility in the CO₂ electroreduction landscape has now become a mechanistically verified reaction route—thanks to the combined power of real-time capillary DEMS and DFT simulations. Our latest study unveils acetylene (C₂H₂) as a key intermediate in CO₂ electrolysis on copper catalysts—previously undetected due to its fleeting nature. Using high-resolution DEMS, we tracked its formation in real time, while DFT helped confirm its transformation into butadiene (C₄H₆) and benzene (C₆H₆) through electrochemical dimerization and cyclotrimerization. This newly uncovered reaction process is not only of fundamental scientific interest—it holds serious industrial promise for producing sustainable C4–C6 compounds under ambient conditions. It’s the kind of chemistry that could anchor new startup technologies in the Power-to-X space.
